Why electrical planning matters at the start of a renovation
The most expensive electrical work in a renovation is the work done twice. Positions that seemed fine on paper but don’t work once the kitchen layout is finalised. Lighting that was roughed-in before anyone thought about where the island bench would go. An outlet added after tiling because no one discussed kitchen appliance needs before the walls were finished.
Early involvement - even just a conversation before the planning is locked in - prevents most of these scenarios.
What happens at rough-in stage
Rough-in is the stage before walls and ceilings are finished. It’s when cables are run, conduit is set, mounting boxes are positioned and any structural elements that affect the electrical layout are addressed. This is also the time to discuss anything that might affect the final fit-off - the height of switches, outlet positions relative to cabinetry, fan support points in the ceiling.
Rough-in is fast and relatively inexpensive compared to accessing the same positions after the wall is finished. That’s why getting the rough-in right matters so much.
Fit-off stage
Once the renovation is complete - walls and ceilings finished, cabinetry in, tiles done - Ed returns for fit-off. This is when the switches, outlets, fittings, fans and any other devices are installed and commissioned. It’s also the stage where final adjustments and any additions requested since the rough-in are addressed.
Having the same electrician at both stages means no context is lost between the two visits. Ed knows what was roughed-in, what was discussed at planning stage and what still needs to happen.
Switchboard capacity in renovations
Renovations frequently increase the electrical load in a property - a new kitchen might add a dishwasher, oven, microwave, extraction fan and underfloor heating. A bathroom renovation might add an exhaust fan, heated towel rail and underfloor heating. Each of these needs its own circuit, and each circuit needs space in the switchboard.
Checking switchboard capacity at the planning stage means any upgrade that’s required is included in the initial quote, not discovered as an additional cost halfway through the build.
